Perhaps I should take a look at it again. I decided to stay at Linux only, but I guess that it's important not to upgrade Qtractor or any other audio app, when doing a recording. I'll keep the next stable svn version of Qtractor, delete all older packages and if I ever will make music while Qtractor's latest svn version should fail, I would remove this version and install the stable svn package again. To be honest, I listened to some current Linux only productions (take a look at JACK devel, LAD and 64 Studio) and they all had the bad sound quality I know from my own Linux productions. In the 80ies and 90ies I made much better productions using the MT44D: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Mt5lJrsWyxU/Sg_2K_2HkYI/AAAAAAAAAsg/Wz2hMdSkY_o/s400/1360_mt44d.jpg The trick was using one track as sync track for the Atari ST sequencer, then making a 3 audio track + sequencer tracks recording on DAT. After this I copied the DAT recording to 2 tracks of the MT44D and added additional 2 audio tracks and then I mastered the result again to DAT. That said the CME microchips for old analogue synth and some other analogue equipment make a big difference. Microsoft and Apple aren't able to emulate CME filters too, but anyway the sound isn't as muddy as it is for Linux. I guess there still are issues because of JACK and that it isn't caused by Qtractor, because most recordings I listened, were made with Ardour. However, I guess I will be fine with Linux during this year. I just need to fix some issues and then I'll keep one stable system. I hope you'll come back to the Linux music community. We need some more people who reveal weak spots. In the last years I meet some people on audio lists making high quality music, testing several Linux distros and apps and then they changed to Microsoft or Apple :(. Keep in mind, that for Qtractor there is the chance to breathe a wishes. Rui doesn't ignore needs. I only fear that 64 Studio might fall and that there will be no replacement. Good luck with using Logic! Ralf |
