Hi there, I had the same problem while trying to embed my icon. In the end I could not archive it with py2exe (followed the same track as you). In the end I used resurce hacker (http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/) to change the icon. As a related note, you may see your icon embedded on the exe while editing, but Windows won't display it for some reason.
