I notice from your report that

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/plplot1 --disable-dyndrivers --disable-shared
  >& configure.output

works without problems, yet from before your script which invoked configure
with an enormous number of details failed with the 4th option (whatever was
in that position) getting clobbered, e.g.,
configure: error: invalid feature name: dyndrivers
or
configure: error: invalid feature name: cxx

I would like to get to the bottom of that problem so could you please do a
number of configure tests (starting from tarball unpack each time) to narrow
down the cause of the option clobbering? We don't need to know any
intermediate details, but please investigate and let us know the final
results of what triggers the configure error above.  For example, is it just
certain options, just a large number of options, or just using a script to
invoke configure?  I am sure there is some bug there, and once you narrow
down the conditions that trigger it we have a better chance of replicating
it on our systems and perhaps even solving it.

From my first look at the detailed files you attached, that is a similar
problem (for the tcl/tk libraries) to the static gd library problem I just
solved, but the solution may be complicated so it may be a while before
I find the best solution.

Let's leave it at that for the time being.  You working on narrowing down
the conditions that trigger the configure error, and me working on the
case where only the static version of tcl/tk libraries are installed.
