Hi arjen,
thx for reply. plpoin3() displays a 3D cloud. so far i 
understand i need a function function that takes:
unordered ( pos (x,y)+ value)  -> value=z[x'][y'] (ordered)
I had the implession that  plgriddata() will do exacty that.

i have a simple example programm of the problem (not working)
can i post this to the ml as explanation what i am looking for ?

In addition to Alan's reply, the need for array elements z[x][y] does
not
necessarily mean that you need data for every integral value of x and y,
as you
seem to imply.

plpoin3() expects individual points (x[i],y[i],z[i]) (i=0,...,N).

You may want to look at plcont() for filled contours for instance, which
takes
a matrix z[nx][ny].
