Or maybe the problem depends more on the characteristics of your X server and the X visual you are using. Maybe the output of xdpyinfo would be helpful. Also, does it (the problem you were seeing) depend on what other apps are running on the X server at the same time? For example, Netscape and XEmacs can sometimes hog colors. If you're on a 256 pseudocolor visual and most colors are absorbed by a previously running Netscape, PLplot can get into a bind on color allocation. Alan W.
