Most European languages other than English whose alphabets are based on
the
Latin letters have their share of extra characters ... My, even in
English
you once in a while find a character outside the basic ASCII range,
naivity
(when spelled correctly), comes to mind - no offense :), it was just the
first word with a "trema" that came to mind! 

It all shows that the translation is less than straighthforward.
