I did not submit a bug report because I am not entirely certain what the problem really is. I was fishing for responses from the list before writing up anything "official". I will do so, though ... and, of course, I am happy to help with test builds, etc. One possibility is that it has nothing to do with Tiger or Mac OS. Tiger's dev-tools comes with gcc 4.0. Our Linux boxes run a slightly older version of gcc. So, it seems possible this type problem results from changes (or bugs) in gcc itself. I'm not really sure.
