If you add your driver to /server/drivers/laser/ and edit the Makefile.am in that directory then player should build your driver when you compile. You may also need to add a test in acinclude.m4 and run autoreconf followed by ./configure. Alternatively look at the instructions for creating plugin drivers and develop your driver as a plugin and merge it into player once it is working.
