Folks, looking at the code in libplayertcp/playertcp.cc, it appears that map tiles in the mapfile interface will be compressed using jpeg, if that library exists during compilation, and otherwise, will be uncompressed. That's fine, but there's no way for a client to tell whether the received data is compressed or uncompressed - it assumes that the client library is compiled with the same settings as the server, which may not be the case.
