It wasn't that bad. The postgres (7.4) that I originally used was installed as part of the Fedora install. When I realized the advanced search wasn't going to work correctly with the 7.4 version, I downloaded the 7.2 postgresql source and compiled it. I don't think I used any special configure options. Think I followed the netdisco install guide - look at the postgresql section. I did use a configure prefix of /usr/local/postgres or something similar so I could keep the two versions separate.
