I installed the latest verison of MagicAssistant (magicassistant-1.4.0.9-win32.win32.x86), but it crashes on startup.
(I first updated my previous installation, but that gave the same error)
Did you get new java? I did not had a chance to repackage them with new jre. It needs 1.8
If you don't want to update your system default, unzip jre package in root of install and rename to "jre" (folder will usually have a version in name,
Need to get rid of version)

from time to time, I check if there is a new update via the downloads section.
Now, it has been a while since I last updated.
I didn't check the update page (mostly I only look at http://mtgbrowser.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Change_Log)
I added some list manipulation and creation functions to my web server.
But I still use (and like) your tool too :-).

For those who comes for the startup failure, making sure that java 1.8 is used and still wondering why the program freezed on startup using a workspace created with an old version like me, follow step 4 in Bug #395

Thanks Bjoern for reporting this, I can reproduce the issue using
old workspace, it dead locks. I will publish fix soonish
(that dead lock can happened randomly, not only when you using old workspace)

I installed the new version also on Xubuntu 14.04, but I get the same (original) error. I'll check if java 8 is in the repository or will download it from oracle if not.

No I need 1.8 for this version (MA 1.4)
MA 1.3.x works with 1.6
The package I got from oracle which is included suppose to be 32 bit
java. What do you mean "in the repo"?
When you unzip the package, can you run
MagicAssistant/jre/bin/java
and check what it reports?

With "repo" I mean the standard repository of Xubuntu.
Now, it works as expected.
I attached the log file of the first error (before install of Java 1.8).

update of Java solved the issue.
I was unaware jre8 was already out there.
The new skin/background is very dark, can this easily be set to white instead of black/dark grey?
I found the setting, but when changing this, the background of the 'card navigator' window and the description beneath the card image stay dark.
restarting solved it.
You don't even need to restart, just clicking on anothe card
will refresh Card Info, and Card Navigator can be refresh from view menu -> Refresh
I kind of like dark theme but I will probably switch defaults back to white
as long as I can customize, any default will do for me :-)
I'll give the dark theme also a try.
Have you seen why new What is New page?

Weird. I install on 64 bit package on ubuntu 14.04 and it works fine
(and I can see it is using right java).
32 package won't work on 64 bit
it is the 32bit I tried (it's on a atom PC)
I installed java 1.8 from oracle, but I still need to test.
In the repo, only java 1.7 is available.
But this is sufficient for the 64bit version?
