I've been running for about 1 year now on two RK3066's with USB webcams 24/7. I did have the disappearing USB device (gone from lsusb) until I played around with different kernels. Also different cameras were better such as http://www.amazon.com/Kinobo-Origami-Webcam-Desktop-microphone/dp/B004FLJ4YIwhich rarely disconnected even with Alok's kernel. The main reason I set out to build my own distribution and kernels is to have complete control over the OS and kernel. I have the MK802IV quad core running Ubuntu 14.04 already and I'm in the process of documenting that. This will allow the possibility of inline people detection without affecting the the normal frame acquisition and motion detection flow. I'm working on a Java solution where I left off with my Python solution for a loosely coupled plugin based architecture for motion detection and frame processing. The core is already built out and can detect multiple areas of motion per frame and write videos. In my Install OpenCV project https://github.com/sgjava/install-opencv I provide example code for motion and people detection for Java and Python. It wouldn't be hard to use this with Motion to analyze videos.
