Thanks for your answer, Rob. In my case, the folder in wich the images/movies for motion will be saved, is located at: /var/www/capture The folder capture has ownership of nobody:nogroup (as the others because it's located in the main folder of the apache server). If I make this folder and sub-folders owned by root:root, it has the same effect. I changed the permissions of this folder (just to see if it works), to 777 (also the sub-folders). I also created the user motion. Now, if I try to start motion with the command: /etc/init.d/motion start I get: root@cameras:/usr/local/etc# /etc/init.d/motion start Starting motion detection : motion [0] Processing thread 0 - config file /usr/local/etc/motion.conf [0] Processing config file /usr/local/etc/thread1.conf [0] Processing config file /usr/local/etc/thread2.conf [0] Processing config file /usr/local/etc/thread3.conf [0] Motion 3.2.11.1 Started [0] Exit motion, cannot create process id file (pid file) /var/run/motion/motion.pid: [0] Motion going to daemon mode As seen, the user motion can't create the pid file because it's not root. Even if it tells it's going to daemon mode, it's actually not running. If I remove the user motion, it works, but just if I start it manually. I never used or created the user motion before, as I just used to compile motion, as root, and made "make install" and all was going well. That it works as root means it is almost certainly a file permissions problem. Check that the user "motion" has ownership of the output directories and all files inside. -- Please keep list traffic on the list.
