Well, maybe there's indeed a good reason to use a modern compressor. But then, why not using the *.xz format directly? According to "man xz", the *.lzma format is a legacy file format. It's the deprecated predecessor of *.xz. So that's what I'm wondering. The *.lzma format appears to be a lousy compromise. It is neither really widespread nor state of the art.
