I thought it would be nice to have higher resolution sprites
as the old ones are looking quite bitmapped or jaggie -
jagged pixelly edges, etc. I decided it to take on this task
myself.
I have begun a Sprite Enhancement Project as of 2 days
ago. I am redrawing all of the Marathon Infinity sprites in
higher resolutions. I have started with the Weapons in
Hand sprites and have completed the idle fist sprite frame
at the time of this post. I will be moving on to the
character sprites after this.
The project will include alpha masking for transparency in
such things as the rocket contrail, the flame bursts, etc.
I will probably upload the project when I get a full sequence
or two drawn of Weapons in Hand.

Wow, that is ambitious! We could use someone like you for our EMR
conversion to hi-res. :)
Aleph One 1.0 included enhancements to fully support replacement character and weapon-in-hand sprites, including images with different proportions. The Marathon 2 scenario bundled with Aleph One contains examples of replacement characters and weapons. Several other graphics projects can be found and discussed at Pfhorums and Simplici7y.
