I would like to add that sometimes I get a similar behaviour in
gnome-panel.
I am not able to reproduce it programmatically, but it seems like an
icon in the systray leaves about 100 pixels "empty" when removed (even
if the icon only measures 24 pixels).

Could it be a particular gtk version bug? I have 2.16.1 installed.
