In all fairness to libusb, I believe the fragility you are seeing can be
mostly attributed to the underlying Linux USB subsystem.  Libusb on
Linux is, after all, a relatively thin layer over the usbfs driver
interface.  There isn't a lot to go wrong in libusb itself.
