Dear all,

The problem is solved already.  I added "-lmpich" and 
"-L/opt/mpich/ch-p4/lib" to the link line.  I still don't understand 
why this is necessary (in particular, because this directory is 
already contained in $LD_LIBRARY_PATH), but at least it works now.

Comments are still welcome, but it's not so urgent any more.
