Still alive! Work commitments have sliced into my "open-source" time also. I really want to forge ahead with the project, but I too am wondering whether we should reconsider goals and timelines. --Jaxon Abraham Al-Saleh wrote: >how everyone is doing. haven't heard anything for awhile. > >I don't know, maybe this was just too big a project for us? how everyone is doing. haven't heard anything for awhile. I don't know, maybe this was just too big a project for us? I know that I have a lot less time to work on any of it than I thought I would, especially considering the tight deadlines at work. Maybe it's going to be better overall to compile a list of utilities and how-tos for the avertecs, and post them on popular linux sites and the unofficial averatec forums? --=20 Abe Al-Saleh And then came the Apocolypse. It actually wasn't that bad, everyone got the day off and there were barbeques all around. |

This whole kernel configuration stuff is great fun, isn't it? :-) Come to think of it, maybe we should just go with a NetBSD base. Everything's in the kernel by default, but the system is still clean. That's what all successful projects do. They barely get off the ground, and when they're bracing themselves for a littl success, they throw away all their work and start over. If that isn't a good idea, I don't know what is! </drunken rant> <sober> Ugh.... you know how drunk you were when you can't even see the start tag for the drunken rant section. I think I'll casually forget to write a close tag for the sober section. I'm personally excited about the Zeta 1.0 release and The fantastic strides Haiku is taking. ;) I'll have to try it out. Also make sure CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0M=(y||m) because that's seems to be the module we need for the modem, so that we can use the slmodem daemon to make it work, I still haven't had time to test with an analog phone-line. I hadn't even realized Autopackage 1.0 had been released! I'll have to check that out! I think I've tried minislack. It's a 3rd party effort, no? ZipSlack might also be interesting. Really, we *could* just take a Slackware install, par down the packages a long ways, and rebuild from the ground up (using the default Slackware packages). Then, we'd end up with exactly what we want; no more, no less. Well, except that it'd be awesome if BeOS supported Averatec hardware a bit better. Then Slackware would be providing a bit more than I'd want :-). Nathan had some valid points about my kernel config, so I retooled it based on a standard Slackware config. It is now only "optimized" for the Averatec. All other options (except for old CD-Rom support and ISDN) are intact. Anyone care to give it a try? In other news, has anyone heard of MiniSlack? Slackware on 1 CD with some pared down choices. I'm going to try grafting our packages onto it, and tweaking their install routine so maybe we can end up with an ISO out of this whole deal. I'll keep everyone updated on my progress. It feels very promising though. Has anyone fooled around with the new autopackage 1.0 release? Just curious as it seems like and interesting project. --Jaxon |

Guys, I'm heading out of town for the weekend, I probably won't have inet access. I'll (hopefully) never use a USB Floppy drive, but the support would be nice to have. I'd hate to explain to someone who's still carrying floppies around that my system *could* support floppies, but I'd rather save the 16k (or whatever) it'd take to store the module. *shrug* Kind of a "because we can" thing. Here's the kernel config I'd like to go with. Support for some things like a floppy drive or parallel port is just not there as it's not part of the Averatec and I don't see huge number of people trying to retrofit. However, support for everything USB, Bluetooth, and Firewire is there as there are a pile of add-on devices that support that stuff. Thoughts? --Jaxon |

hey, has anyone messed with getting the modem working under linux? I did a little when I first got it, looks like a pctel, but the only working pctel driver at the time was for 2.4 kernels only. I don't particularly need it (although it's handy on the road, not that I travel much), but others may, and it would be cool if it worked. Anyone know anything about it? -- Abe Al-Saleh And then came the Apocolypse. It actually wasn't that bad, everyone got the day off and there were barbeques all around. |

I've updated the SF site with a couple of additional packages, and tweaked the file release doc. I'll be posting Gorn's kernel with my modified config tomorrow. The Slack 10.1 HOWTO will be done by Friday. I'm thinking at this point, we should probably stick to the 2.6.11 kernel as a stable base, and then use the next few weeks to customize Slack 10.1. Let me know what you guys think... --Jaxon |

For convenience in the face of my boundless laziness, what's the URL for the packages / kernel? On Thu, 17 Mar 2005 21:51:36 -0600, Akshun J <ak...@my...> wrote: > Alright, dudes. Alright, dudes. I am off-work for a week starting tomorrow, and I would like to finalize a pre-alpha release that will consist of laptop-specific packages, and a solid kernel config. Let's use SF's bug tracker to log and track bugs. I think the patched-kernel itself is pretty darn functional and stable thanks to Gorn, so unless someone has some issues, I say we move forward with it. My HOWTO is almost done, and I will post it this weekend along with my kernel config. Taking off on Nathan's idea, I think the release of all the tools as packages is a great first start and will give us some breathing room to put some focus on adapting Slack 10.1. If you haven't tested out the kernel or the packages, please do so this weekend and give us some feedback! --Jaxon |

Tired and just want to know? That means the answer's probably going to hit you in about 15 minutes! Many people, myself included, often make breakthroughs when it's way past bedtime, or when it's the middle of the day and you *just* *want* to get *off* the *computer*, but some stupid problem's nagging you. To keep current on Slack, it's usually enough to just install the latest stable version. If you have a carnal lust for the bleeding edge, I'm sure there are ways to automatically track -current. I've never been interested in being THAT up to date, though, so I'll leave that answer to someone else. About sound: this is a problem on the 3150P as well. Actually, I think that's the way it is in Slackware in general (you have to run alsaconf or something like that and set up volumes), but the 3150P's AC97 requires that the kernel module for that device be inserted as a module with certain parameters. Mine isn't working right now, as I VERY rarely, if ever, use sound, but once you've got alsa set up with volumes above zero, you just need to add a line to rc.modules (or like I do, rc.local) inserting the module with the proper params. Ah, ya twisted my arm. This might not be something you need, but I'll post anyway, since it's something every slackware / 3150P user needs to do: modprobe snd-via82xx index=3D0 dxs-support=3D2 We should probably include this little fix in whatever packages we're looking to make.
