Martijn. Many thanks for responding. Here is what happens if I try to start `kile` from command line: kabalg@p4:~> kile kabalg@p4:~> Basically, nothing... There must be some sockets left open, but I don't know what their names are, nor do I know where to look for them. In the meantime, I do get kile splash screen when I boot my PC in the morning and a few other glitches, reminding that the system "thinks" that kile is running. BTW, I can access kile as super-user from the command line, but that is highly unsatisfactory. Besides, it would be most useful to restore KDE to full functionality.
