I opened a .zip shape file and slected some of the data and pressed the delete key and I got an error message "selected items layers must be editable". How can I make this .zip shape file data editable?

I figured it out. You select the data you want to edit, right-click, select Feature Info which will open a small window, select all the data in the window, right-click, select Editable

As far as I know, a zip file is not editable. You will be able to delete in-memory features, but if you want to save back your modification to the file (third button of the toolbar), you'll get an error message.
Please, unzip your file first.
When you open he (unzipped) shapefile for the first time, it is not editable. The simplest way to make it editable is to right click on the ayer name and to change the "editable" property in the contex menu.
