The hotkey used to pan the map during editing (Shift + Alt) is used by windows system to change the keyboard language.
In France, this hotkey generally switch quietly from french keyboard (AZERTY) to english one (QWERTY). Your computer suddenly becomes a little crazy, and it may take time before you realize that the problem originates in the use of this hotkey.

Ede, any suggestion to replace this hotkey ?

nope, we are already pretty stuffed with key combinations. so the last time this came up for ubuntu linux i suggested to simply disable the shortcut in the system settings. i simply cannot stand a window manager reserving/blocking such generic key combo's.

if you see a valid alternative combo, check the shortcut help beforehand, i am open to suggestions. a runtime config for these settings is not on my timeline at all though.

Maybe I missed the point : what would be the problem with using a single key like "SHIFT" or ">" or a combination (SHIFT+>) ?

are < or > usually located on the left bottom on every keyboard?

i remember Jukka being involved last time we discussed shortcut assignments.
      Jukka: any idea?

unfortunately is not an option cause the key is not placed on the left bottom internationally, see
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout

assuming that only a very small percentage of our users have multiple layouts activated i'd still suggest to have them simply disable the shortcut under windows. they can still place the language switcher in their taskbar and switch via mouse, which is btw. much less prone to accidental layout switching.

    Hi,

Problem is mainly what shortcuts you are used to have. Users would complain if Windows Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V would be changed to something else.
What is good with the current Alt and Alt-Shift is that it is easy keep fingers ready for pan and zoom when digitizing (forefinger on Alt all the time). If panning could be connected to either Shift or < key only it would not make working any harder. Changing fingers between Alt and Shift+> does not feel as good. However pressing Shift or < when in other windows could change to tool on the map window but that's up to how well Ede has done the big work with shortcuts.

I admit that it is irritating that Alt-Shift is changing keyboard language. Myself I have removed the support for English keyboard from the task bar settings but that is not a good solution for all users. However, I can't really say what would be the best thing to do.
