After editing for a while the application gives out of
memory errors.

The machine has 512MB of memory and is only utilising
about 250MB.

You must specify the amount of memory you want to give
jEdit (and the VM in general) with the option -mx<size>m.
Do this either on the command line, in the shell/batch
start script, or the Windows jEdit launcher settings.
