what would be great is a relative and not absolute
linking to the files of a certain bib-entry. Relative could
mean relative to the .bib file for example.

I was suggesting to define:
- a LOCAL path, related to your own computer, with the
papers at one place, and the bibtex file in your TeX tree;
- an EXPORT path (that could be redefined into the export
dialog window) so that you can send your bibtex file to a
webserver (export to HTML), and put all the attached
articles (.ps, .pdf) in a directory that corresponds to the
webmaster choices (more probably different from the
directory tree on your own computer).
This could also be performed by using a macro PATH and
referencing files by
#PATH#/ThisPaper.pdf
At time of export, PATH could be (re)defined to match the
needed path. Using the STRING feature of Bibtex files, it is
possible to define a different path for different files
(your own files, those of your colleagues,...)
By the way, JabRef is a great (the greatest ?) bibliography
managing tool !!!

I love JabRef! About the only thing I'm missing is the
ability to enter several paths to be searched for PDF
documents rather than just one default path. This would be
especially useful for groups of people (like a research
group) sharing their PDF documents.
