Hi there,

it would be a nifty little feature, to add an unique ID
(a number) automatically to each document entry to
identify it and to be the link to the paper version in
my files.

Currently, since JabRef is sorting according to the
BibTeX-IDs by default, I'm prepending a 5 digit number
to each document manually to have them in a default
sort order, which I can compare with my printouts.

    Just a suggestion:

We can use the hash code of the simple/extended HTML string
for example. But beware, if the mapping/export method
changes the numbers will change also. Furthermore the
    hashing allows also negative IDs.

Furthremore this can be also used for content-depend euqlity
    checks.

    Kind regards, Joerg

Why not just give each Entry a unique number when it is
first entered? Endnote does it like this, and this is very
handy for databases for which one keeps paper versions of
every entry: You just file the papers in the physical folder
in the same order that you enter the record in the database,
and there is no need ever for reordering.

You would have to store the highest used ID somewhere in a
comment in the file, of course.
