Hi!
It would be valuable to think about a DRIVER interface for fetching article metadata via online databases like BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine). A documentation of the european DRIVER project may be found here:

As it works as web services implementation in java should be fairly easy, a common search interface for articles could be provided falling back on rather large aggregator databases that do all the metadata harvesting via OAI-PMH.
This would be a huge extension to the already nice features like fetching from arXiv and add valuable new sources for easy research (e.g. by author, title etc.) like it is done currently only for MedLine (not a fault of JabRef but of the inability of OAI-PMH to do real searches).
