Thanks very much for JabRef -- it really is the best
reference manager I've seen. I hope this request will
make it even better :-).
Lots of people have requested that you provide links to
other types of files. I propose that you implement a
simple feature whereby the user can specify any number
of extra fields that are to be treated as links. For
each field, in the preferences GUI you can put a
textbox for ``external program'' and ``default directory''.
This system means that you don't actually have to code
in support for every extra file type people want; they
can just add them in themselves.
I would like to be able to store reviews of papers in
separate plain text flies, as this preserves
indentation, spacing and so on. I have seen others
that would like to link to other types of files. I
think it'd be great if we could do this by:
1. Going to ``Options'' -> ``Set up General Fields''
2. Adding a field ``link:textfile''
3. Going to ``Options'' -> ``Preferences'' ->
``External Programs''
4. Pressing a button to add a new external program entry.
5. Filling in the field, program and default directory
-- e.g. ``textfile'', ``/usr/bin/gvim'',
``/home/matatk/paper_reviews''.
I hope that this is enough information and that you
will consider implementing it. I think it could solve
a lot of feature requests in one go!
Thanks again for JabRef,
best regards,
Matthew
