I forgot to add that people on de.comp.text.tex have stated
that a BibTeX manager that can handle Z39.50 would be a
"killer application" for humanities, history and social
sciences, who often work with old or rare books that never
make it into online databases.

I strongly recommend including this filter, as for the
humanities (I am a historian) the direct download from library
OPACs would be extremely helpful!

I was made aware that there is already an older request for
that, 933424. It uses the name that's more known to users,
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue), but I didn't look for
that.

This is interesting, and it seems like support for this
could be very useful.
However, there are dozens of interesting things to work on,
and the ever-present bugs to fix, so I can't promise to
spend time on this. If someone wants to help with
implementing this feature, I'll be happy to provide general
help on the existing JabRef code.

I strongly vote for this feature, too. It would be great
also for economists. I willing to give some money to someone
who implements it. How much money do we have to collect for
this feature?

I also strongly support this request, it would be a huge advantage for me and others who use OPAC. Unfortunately I lack the abilities in helping to implement this feature.

In the newsgroup where this first came up
(de.comp.text.tex), I was pointed to more Java libraries for
this format:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/jzjkit
http://sourceforge.net/projects/zifx
http://www.jafer.org/index.html (no files released yet)
I myself can't program in Java, unfortunately.
