It would be useful to me if jabref were able to access
PDF files over the network, perhaps via ssh (secure
shell). We maintain a local repository of PDF papers
of interest to our research group, but since it is now
large, it becomes painful to copy it to all computers
on the local network. There would be no need to copy
the repository if jabref could access the PDF files
over the network. I realize that the url field could
be used in principle, but with automatic downloads from
large databases (ISI, INSPEC, publishers), the url
field gets filled by the publishers official DOI link
(and I would like to leave it that way).
The ability to access pdf files via ssh and/or http
would be useful
If jabref doesn't mangle the "file name", perhaps it's
just a matter of choosing a pdf viewer that is capable
of accessing the specified url (i.e. "file name"). I
tried using the konqueror browser under KDE (linux) as
the PDF application (konqueror accepts a number of
different url types), but it wouldn't work from jabref
(file not found). Typing the pdf file name directly
into the location bar worked, however
("fish://ddd@machine.here.edu/home/ddd/refs/dummy.pdf").
On the other hand, I just realized that I could also
create a network-mounted file system....
