Jean, Again thanks. Yesterday I finally took the plung and downloaded the Windows XP version of Pilot Desktop and Nokia Suite and the Windows Driver for my dongle. The USB dongle works perfectly. Both the Palm and the Nokia backed up via Infrared, on my small XP partition that I loath using, with no errors. So it looks like the driver is broken or maybe it is the way that the linux kernel is interacting with the USB port on the Sony Vaio PCG-GR390.
