I had not heard of "FREE IMAGE" before and Google is not helping any. There is a bug (resource accounting leak) in GraphicsMagick 1.1.X releases prior to 1.1.6 (released yesterday) which causes image loading to become much slower after a large number of images have been read by one process. If this is how you are using GraphicsMagick, then I definitely recommend testing with 1.1.6. If "FREE IMAGE" uses 8-bits per sample but you are using a GraphicsMagick "Q:16" build (16-bits per color sample), then that would explain some of the performance difference.
