Nice, I bought the relatively brand new Canon PowerShot A570 IS and it is working great under KUbuntu 7.04: * When connected, Digikam is automatically started in the download pictures screen. No configuration or driver installation neccessary. * The whole process of detecting the camera and downloading the pictures seems to be faster than under Mac OS X. * The camera is detected as USB PTP Class Camera by Gphoto. KInfoCenter seems to detect more information about the camera (manufacturer, speed, etc) My feedback to improve the Gphoto experience even more: * How can I contribute my camera identification so that it can be automatically detected? KInfoCenter says (is this enough information for autodetection?): product ID=0x314c, distributor ID=0x4a9, manufacturer=Canon Inc. * It would help if there was a command line tool (preferably integrated into Digikam also) to retrieve the necessary information of a camera when it is not yet automatically detected, and then send this information to the Gphoto project. * What about contacting digital camera manufacturers with the simple question to send the product ID and other necessary information for autodetection to the Gphoto project when they release a new camera (or even BEFORE they launch the new camera!!). In that way people can easily see which camera's will work with Gphoto and base their purchase on this information. If the manufacturers send this information before they released the new model, this would mean the camera can be recognized on Linux distributions the day of the camera launch! -- Mvg, Sander Devrieze. |
