    Another frequently requested feature from the
    newsgroup.
    Users strongly need some way to have tic labels
    for some or all axes read from the datafile, instead of
    having
    to specify them before the 'plot' command, in a
    long-form
    'set xtics ('label1' <pos1>, 'label2' <pos2>, [...])'
    statement
    that may have to be automatically generated by
    utitilities
    outside gnuplot.

    We do have a patch in our tracker here at SourceForge.net
    that implements a rather astonishingly large superset of
    this feature ("categoric(++) plots").
