Excellent stuff Chris.
Ideally, I think this document should go into a Users Guide, but I'm worried 
we don't have enough content to support both a Design Doc and Users Guide.

So I suggest this content go in the Design document.
I suggest you replace geotools2/geotools-src/core/sdocbook/data.sgml with your 
text.  You may want to incorporate the data class diagram in your docs too.  
(I created it with Poseidon some time back).

Afterwards, if you run gtpublish your new docs should be sucked into the main 
design.html docs.
