Bugs item #522300, was opened at 2002-02-25 15:13 You can respond by visiting: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=104091&aid=522300&group_id=4091 Category: IO Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Bryan Scott (bryanscott) Assigned to: Ian Turton (ianturton) Summary: ArcExplorer not able to read Shapefiles Initial Comment: I work with research vessels (ships). While trying to utilise geotools to generate shapefiles of vessel track for use with mapserver (http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/) it became apparent that the shapefiles generated by geotools could not be read by mapserver. The idea is to generate an updated vessel track every 5 min as the vessel steams along. The shapefile trying to be generated contains a single line with 1000's of points (5 minute vessel track - 288 points per day * 3 months). Further experimentation revealed that the shapefiles generated could be read and displayed by esri's arcview but not by esri's arc Explorer product. If the generated shapefiles where saved from arcview, they could be viewed from arcview, arc explorer and mapserver. I then reduced from a few 1000 points to a couple of points. The differences between the generated shapefile and the one saved by arcview was only a few bytes. I attempted to compare with the esri shapefile specification. Attached is the conversion ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Bryan Scott (bryanscott) Date: 2002-05-15 14:57 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=202486 I have had a bit further of a look. I have found the problem and fixed, is it possible to include in geotools. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Bryan Scott (bryanscott) Date: 2002-05-14 15:12 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=202486 Attempted with geotools 0.8.0 but no luck. Also tried with latest version of ArcExplorer (Java version) version 4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Bryan Scott (bryanscott) Date: 2002-02-25 22:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=202486 The arcExplorer I am trying to use is 3.1 (java version). Files attached in a zip file are a. the .java for the conversion I am trying to do b. the .txt data file I am trying to convert ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Ian Turton (ianturton) Date: 2002-02-25 21:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=23507 I'd like to look into this can you try attaching the files again. I must confess to only having tested the shapewriter code against arcview. Since I have a unix box I don't have arcexplorer on my machine.
