I would invite you to visit the geotools users list; there are a number of organisations supporting geotools development commercially; and we have a user list to help out in situations where money cannot reach :-) I have an email address I use for some of my GeoTools volunteer work; this one is my company email address and since they sell support for GeoTools and other open source projects I need to ensure I spend my time on paying customers.

JMapFrame is a community effort; championed by members of the user list; and you should be able to take part and fix any issues you have there (by submitting patches). There is a good tutorial example where the feature being clicked on is restyled to show up as selected[1]; you can see how that works and use the same technique for your info tool exercise.
