Hello, At valiant's request, I'm moving a discussion about the future development of the checkout modules to this mailing list. To summarise : the checkout modules have not been moving forward recently, mainly due to my own lack of availability. I would like to share access to the project with other developers in the most intelligent manner possible, and I have been talking to valiant about the best approach to this. This motivation is also inspired by Alec Myers, who has volunteered to further develop the pricing system. Alec and I have been discussing the possibility of a complete overhaul of the pricing system. Anyone who's tried to using the Custom Fields to create complex pricing structures of large galleries with checkout will know that the current system is somewhat lacking, and very hard to use by novices. The ideas proposed by Alec are much more elegant, but move away entirely from the use of the Custom Fields. This opens up the question of backward compatibility. My own thoughts are : 1) It could be useful to create an independent sourceforge project for checkout, to allow this new version to be developed, without blocking updates to the current version. This would allow for beta testing by the community before releasing into the Gallery plugin source. 2) Backward compatibility of the pricing system is desirable but laborious. I would suggest a compromise, which would import the basic pricing structure from any current installation of checkout, i.e. the prices defined in the Admin screen and not those defined by the Custom Fields. This would allow Alec to concentrate on making his code solid, as I'm sure his time is not unlimited. I would appreciate your succinct responses, so we can get the ball rolling while the engine's hot. Jay (jayhen) -- Jay Hennessy Elucidos Services Ltd. www.elucidos.com |
