Andy, The RSS integrators Michael mentioned would be a nice touch with a few links strategically placed: e.g., front page, side bar on forums, etc. Also, I just noticed that the integration name spaces are now being included in the codex search function. Nice work whoever got it going. On letting anyone post, I have mixed emotions. I'd tend towards making it a second-tier moderated announcement system. Require approval to become a poster, but then not have moderation on individual posts. Kind of like when you made us moderators for the whole forum, but gave us guidelines on how to moderate with the expectation that we wouldn't moderate on a topic we weren't qualified in. So, require an "announcer" to establish some bona fides (e.g., a plugin author, theme author, other appropriate contributor classes) before granting access to announcements. This would only require a little extra work on the core devs parts, since I can't imagine a huge number of applications per week, once it's set up. But it would keep the signal-noise ration down on the announcements. Anyone else's thoughts?
