The following references were invaluable in creating FreeNFS. The notes below, will give you some hints as to some basic limitations benefits of FreeNFS and connecting either V2 or V3 protocols, note ALL protocols are backwards compatible..

Notes:
Version 2 of the protocol operated entirely over UDP. NFSv2 only allowed the first 2 GB of a file to be read.

Version 3 supports 64-bit file sizes and offsets, to handle files larger than 2 gigabytes. TCP as a transport-layer protocol.

Version 4 Better performance improvements, strong security

Version 4.1 Takes advantage of clustered servers, scalable parallel access to files distributed among multiple servers.

WebNFS, is a layer of Version 2 and Version 3, Allows Web-browsers and to enable operation through firewalls.
