That statistic for the freemarker project is pretty good. Two projects could have a bit more visibility than one. It's an extra record on freshmeat.net with extra releases that can get on the front page periodically. The real question is how to set up things to maximize the probability of people donating some stuff and getting involved. Probably the only way to know which approach works is by trial and error.
