It's great to decrease the size of the base package (as written before), but it won't help you for potorealistic scenerey. There you need lots of texture RAM - or textures that are compressed and can be used in the compressed form. So unless (nearly) all 3D chipstets support that compression scheme it's not very useful for the scenery.
