And of course it's really hard to debug this, because the system never comes up and you can never get a log file from the engine. :( The symptom above is that the evms_activate script is asking the engine for information about a specified volume, but the engine can't find that volume in its list. Thus, the linuxrc script can't get the device-number for that volume to set the root-device. Here's some things to check. Did you enable all the kernel options that you need in order to activate your volumes? All the MD and DM options? The linuxrc script obviously figures out the correct root-volume name, since it prints it right after the error, so it shouldn't be an error with the script. Are you using devfs? (I'm assuming not, since the linuxrc script didn't report starting the devfs daemon.) I'll probably need to put together another initrd with extra debugging info for you to try.
