A mature spelling functionality has been difficult to implement for Vim, because unlike a single-platform editor that can rely on an OS functionality (as some vim scripts do), a solution for multiple ones requires an internal implementation of code AND dictionaries. I'm not even sure I know of another besides (maybe?) emacs. This is all about to change, but until Vim 7 goes beta, I find dictionary.com very good at suggestions.
