Cliff, Thanks for the tip; you were absolutely right. I used method #1 (seems more compatible with updates), and it worked like a charm. I got advmame, advmenu and the associated adv* utils to compile and run (woohoo!) with slang and svgalib, but not framebuffer. My next steps are getting framebuffer and sound (oss) configured. Am I right in assuming that framebuffer support must be compiled into the kernel? I read the framebuffer HOWTO, but it seems very outdated.
