Maybe they can add a "recommendation" to the help file for this and the password font?
Since the user can easily set their fonts via View->Change Font, I am not sure that this is strictly necessary.

Great that you said the application was Password Safe as this is its site BUT... You didn't give any other information that might be useful! What version is it? What is your Operating System and version? If Windows, is it the 32-bit or 64-bit version? If Linux, what Linux distrivution? Is this the first time it has happened or only after upgrading? Is your Password Safe database on a USB drive or on your system's hard disk or maybe on a network drive? If on a USB, is it full so that there is no space...
May I make an implementation suggestion that the protected and attachment symbols and associated functions are moved to the Fonts class within PasswordSafe rather than in the Tree View class CPWTreeCtrlX. This would be better in my opinion as these symbols are used in dialogs other than the Tree View and are font dependent.

Difficult to test but I have tried and, using the buttons I have found on other dialogs or property pages, the mouse click is ignored (without any beep), if the mouse is moving. I suspect that this is a "feature" of the Microsoft Foundation Class environment used to build the user interface for Password Safe. I would suggest closing this BR as "can't/won't fix as outside of scope of the Password Safe project".
