blah, I hate to continue. The choice (for me) wasn't (at least in my mind) between File Open (which apparently doesn't do what I'd expect either), it was between "open GPX as ... layer", and "Append File" ... wierd!? file open has multiple behaviours, depending on what you open... (shakes head ... in any other app File open brings up a new doc in a new window.. like viking does for .vik files, creating a new layer and importing a gpx track into it is a neat shortcut, but IMHO, unexpected.) obviously,...

Yes. I did get that far yesterday. my GPSMAP accepts (and produces) that extension. And apparently there is a matching header... xmlns:gpxtrx="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3" ... hhmm, that's a 404. https://www8.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensionsv3.xsd exists, and has 16 colours + transparent in it. My C skills are rather rusty...

I'm trying to maintain a network of trails and difficulty ratings, hopefully that folks can import into their chosen nav devices/apps. But there seems to be a very limited choice in export options that retain the color info? That said, I understand that device support for colors is probably pretty marginal too :). screen shot attached.

please push out an updated version ... Obviously I'm not the first, and I just wasted another good few minutes reproducing it. centos 7 doesn't have a mapnik library/package.
