Issue has been explained / resolved, but I can see why the status/error message was misleading. The symptoms do seem to be unique to this Asus firmware however, so no change is anticipated.

This project has been released since 2001, so it is interesting that this hasn't been an issue until now, but I understand that libtool for RHEL would not be a fit for Debian. It does pose some issues from my end though, because I have now retired and my infrastructure to build and test all of the various OS versions is limited.
