If you save a file that is maked as read-only, open it
in jEdit and save it. It is made writeable and saved.

This should warn saying it can't save untill you
specifically remove the read only flag, or better still
just do nothing and highlight the error in the status
bar, much like when no more search entires are found.

I find this anyoing as I have files that are not
checked out but I then accidentally save (i have CTRL-S
habbit) and then open it later and think I have it
checked out when I don't, Jedit removed the read-only flag.

Hi, this is fixed in pre4. Now it will tell you it is read
only, and ask you if you want to activate two stage save to
    try to save anyway
