"Promises privacy, but is malware"
Posted 2022-07-06Pros: Worked well for the first few months. Offered several free IP sites around the world. Promises high level of security. Looks sharp on the desktop.
Cons: At first the app worked fine, it began to refuse to open or close. Next it began to autonomously open and close while visiting websites or not or open a tunnel in another country without my knowledge. Now it has imbedded itself in my computer and will not let go. I have deleted the app, shut down the computer, deleted cookies, etc, But it is blocking access to commonly used public sites even though, it's not supposed to even be there.
Overall: Horrible. I hate this thing. I do not know what to do, It's limiting my ability to use the internet.

"Newer CLI and GUI complete disaster"
Posted 2021-08-19Pros: None. I have a paid subscription to PVPN for two years and it was fine. I am also a subscriber to the email.
Cons: The GUI kept killing my internet connections, meaning even with the GUI turned off or uninstalled even, it wrecked my wi-fi connection. This happened on two Linux mint 20.2 computers, one of which was dual-booted with Win 10. PVPN worked on Windows, showing it wasn't my modem or my computer. I had to re-install Mint three times on both machines, just to get back online.
Overall: A disaster, poor response from support, no effort to correct problems when I told them repeatedly about it.

"Favorite VPN for the right reasons"
Posted 2021-05-20Pros: • The interface is one of the best I've come across. It shows you a world map with all the possible locations to connect to.
• The free version is the best among all VPNs I've tried. No advertisements, and no daily limit.
• Excellent security and privacy. I can safely say that I haven't had to share personal information while using ProtonVPN.
• Flexible subscription plans.Cons: • Speed is limited in free version.
• Lower subscription plans offer little improvement in allowed bandwidth.
• Lesser server locations than competitors.Overall: ProtonVPN is definitely a favorite and one I intend to use for long. I wish there were more locations possible, and the bandwidth, while certainly not very limiting, could use some improvement. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

"One of the best free VPNs out there!"
Posted 2020-06-04Pros: I got ProtonMail's VPN to better protect myself online, and I'm happy to say that unlike some of the other free VPN solutions out there, ProtonMail actually works! I tried looking up my IP address before and after, and the geolocation feature definitely works. I also like how ProtonMail, on Windows desktop at least, lets you decide if you want all your traffic routed through its servers or just some.
Cons: The free tier isn't flexible enough to really select where your spoofed location is - it seems to default to other places in your country. Other free VPNs like the one in Opera Developer let you select which continent to be routed to, but it's questionable where those VPN servers are and how secure your data is.
Overall: I can see why some privacy and security journalists offer ProtonMail as one way of reaching them! I'm happy to sacrifice a little flexibility in choosing which country (which is also helpful since in the US, you don't really have blocked sites anyways, and screwing around with country messes up Google search language results), if it means I can know my data is safe in Swiss servers.
