About Aves Gallery
Aves can handle all sorts of images and videos, including your typical JPEGs and MP4s, but also more exotic things like multi-page TIFFs, SVGs, old AVIs, and more! It scans your media collection to identify motion photos, panoramas (aka photo spheres), 360° videos, as well as GeoTIFF files. Navigation and search is an important parts of Aves. The goal is for users to easily flow from albums to photos to tags to maps, etc. Aves integrates with Android (from API 19 to 33, i.e. from KitKat to Android 13) with features such as widgets, app shortcuts, screen saver, and global search handling. It also works as a media viewer and picker. The app only accesses media files, and modifying them requires explicit access grants from the user. Necessary to display the media coordinates, and to group them by country (via reverse geocoding). Checking for connection states allows Aves to gracefully degrade features that depend on the internet.

Shotwell supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, WebP and RAW photo files. Shotwell's RAW format support is currently limited. When you view a RAW photo, you are actually viewing a JPEG derived from the RAW photo, not the RAW image itself. Additionally, the RAW editing pipeline is not fully 16-bit - you can only export edited photos as 8-bit files. Most supported formats can be used for export (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP). Photo gallery for self-hosted personal servers. You configure photoview to search for media directly from the file system. The media is then automatically organized based on the file structure, directories will become albums that are populated with the photos and videos found inside it. It will automatically rescan for new media and add it to keep it updated. This approach gives you the full control to organize your media how you want. Let it be using a file server like Samba or FTP, or even files from a Nextcloud instance. Multiple users can be configured, each with their own directory of photos and videos. Each user is configured with a username and password, to keep their media private. Albums and individual photos or videos can easily be shared by generating a public or password-protected link.
